How do You Run Sustainably in 2024?

A guide to staying environmentally conscious while staying fit

When I decided to write about sustainable running, I thought that these two topics were so far removed that it can’t be easy to do both at the same time, but that’s not the case.

Sustainability is the practice of meeting our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It involves balancing environmental, economic, and social factors to create systems that can endure over time, reducing harm to the planet and its ecosystems. Sustainability is essential because it addresses the urgent need to preserve natural resources, reduce pollution, and combat climate change, all of which are crucial to maintaining the health of our planet and ensuring a high quality of life for people worldwide, now and in the future.

Now, how does this apply to you and running in today’s world?

  • The biggest impact you can make when trying to be conscious of your footprint pertains to your equipment.
    • There are plenty of brands that make pledges to being sustainable, one of the best known in the game for clothing is Patagonia which is known for its activism. Another great brand that has both shoes and great apparel is On Running, based in Switzerland. They attack topics like, “Can trail-running save the world?” or, “exploring the future of recycling”.
      • If you have questions about what kinds of gear you should purchase from brands like these to get into running, refer to my other post here.
  • There are many events and races that donate proceeds from participating to green causes and make pledges to being environmentally friendly. Here, just by participating, you’re making a difference.
  • Reducing plastic and waste
    • Opting to avoid single-use water bottles or snack containers, and recycling plastic bottles is a small thing that makes a big difference in footprint. Look into a hydration vest like this CamelBak.
  • Plogging, what is it?
    • I came across this concept I was unfamiliar with, “Plogging” is the idea of picking up litter as you’re jogging. Helping clear up the path as you’re running along is a great way to do your part in Sustainable Running.

Leave No Trace

“Leave No Trace” is a reminder to enjoy nature while caring for our planet! It encourages everyone to minimize their impact so future generations can also enjoy the outdoors. This concept is based on seven principles: plan and prepare, camp on durable surfaces, dispose of waste properly, leave what you find, minimize campfire impact, respect wildlife, and be considerate of others. By following these tips, outdoor lovers can help keep our natural spaces safe and enjoyable for everyone. Let’s protect our ecosystems and landscapes!

In conclusion, adopting sustainable running practices is not only possible but also important for our planet’s health. By choosing eco-friendly gear, joining sustainable events, and following practices like plogging and “Leave No Trace,” you can lessen your environmental impact while enjoying fitness. Every small action is part of a bigger effort to protect our natural resources and fight climate change. As runners, we can connect with nature and support its preservation, so future generations can enjoy the same trails and landscapes we love today. So put on your eco-friendly shoes, get moving, and make a positive impact on our environment!
